Sumter
Located in the heart of South Carolina, Sumter is just a two-hour drive from the famous beaches of South Carolina and only 45 minutes from the state capital, Columbia. Sumter is home to Shaw Air Force Base, and there are many nationally known companies located here--Cooper Tools, Caterpillar Inc., Bosch Braking Systems, and Becton Dickinson to name a few. Arts, recreation, educational opportunities, and activities for the avid sportsman (golf, hunting, and fishing)--Sumter has it all! There are too many dining opportunities in and around Sumter to list here, but diners can choose from nearly 40 locally-owned restaurants serving everything from down-home southern barbecue to ethnic goods from places across the world, to more sophisticated dining fare.
One of the most unusual attractions in the Sumter area, the Poinsett Bombing Range is the only U.S. Air Force bombing range in the world that's open to the public. Thousands of visitors each year watch from a safe distance as fighter jets scream above and drop practice ordnance on targets situated throughout the range.
For movie lovers, The Beacon, a 10-screen theater, was recently opened in late 1999. This facility more than doubles the available screens in Sumter. Live theater is also alive and well in Sumter through the Sumter Little Theater.
If you just want to relax and get away from
the pressures of everyday life this is the place to do it. Our pace is ssslllooowww,
and the people are friendly. There are plenty of places to stay. Dining is an
experience. You can sample good old Southern home cooking, traditional barbecue
or a local favorite, fried catfish.
Sumter is easily accessible from the Interstate highway system: I-95 @ Exit 135 (Hwy 378) I-77 @ Exit 9A (Hwy 378) I-20 @ Exit 98 (Hwy 521)
